Research Funding: Economic Impact of Tallow to Honey Producers

The following SCBA Affiliated Clubs will be teaching beginning beekeeper classes this fall using the SC Master Beekeeper Certified Level Training Materials.  Please contact the club directly through the links provided with any questions regarding the courses offered.

Charleston Community Bee Gardens – October 29-30, 2022

Location: Dorchester County Career and Technology Center,     507 Schoolhouse Rd., Dorchester, SC 29437

This is an in-person two-day hands-on Beginner Beekeeping Class.  This class will be using approved SC Beekeeper Certified Level training materials.  This course will be taught by local Certified, Journeyman, and Master Beekeepers.

The class will allow for student interaction, actual equipment and tools for inspection, smoker demonstrations, honey extraction equipment, and local mentoring.  We will provide assistance placing hives and installing bees.  During the class there will be an open hive period with safety equipment provided. 

Cost for the 2 day course is $75 with a textbook provided along with annual membership in a local club.

Laurens County Beekeepers Association – Saturday, October 8th, 8am to 4pm

Location: Joe Adair Outdoor Education Center, Scout Creek Rd, Laurens, SC 29360

Introduction to Beekeeping
There will be classroom and in-hive instruction. Cost: $75 per per person or for two FAMILY members, ie: Couples, Parent/Child etc – this will include classroom material ,workbook and a thumb drive that will have a three volume text for reference. The class size will be limited to 10-20 students to provide for personalized instruction. Equipment: If you have a veil, gloves and jacket, please bring them. There will be gloves and veils to loan for those that do not own any. PLEASE BRING YOUR SMOKER IF YOU HAVE ONE, this will be a great time to learn the correct way to light and keep your smoker lit. A laptop or tablet is optional. Please dress accordingly. It will be warm but you will need to wear closed shoes for safety. If you do not have a bee jacket, consider bringing a long sleeve shirt. I highly recommend dressing or bringing outer clothes to put on for safety during the bee yard segments of the class. Please note that this DOES NOT INCLUDE LUNCH. Please bring a packed lunch and enough drinks/water etc with you. This is an outdoor event and you will need to stay hydrated.

Oconee Beekeepers Association – Wednesdays for 7 Weeks, 6:30pm

Classroom Dates:  September 7, 14 ,21, 28; October 5, 12, 19          Hive Demonstration Day:  October 26

Location:  Walhalla, SC

Registration Ends:  September 2, 2022

This course is designed to introduce interested individuals to the Art of Beekeeping, and to offer course material and instruction to prepare for the South Carolina Certified Level Beekeeper test administered by the SC Beekeeping Association – Master Beekeeper Program.
